Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining steady. According to Artemis data, the network's base layer handled 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, surpassing the 200 million threshold for the first time. This milestone comes after a prolonged period of sideways movement between 100 million and 120 million transactions per quarter in 2024, following a low of nearly 90 million in 2023. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automated execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely recording actions such as sending ether, interacting with smart contracts, or transferring tokens on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity, which began in mid-2025, has seen each quarter outperform the last, culminating in a 43% increase in Q1 2026 compared to the previous quarter. Notably, Ethereum's native token, ether, has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 peak, presenting a potential opportunity for traders to capitalize on the network's fundamental growth. Much of the network's activity is driven by Layer 2 solutions, such as Base and Arbitrum, which offer lower fees and batch transactions for settlement on the main chain. Additionally, the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum has reached a record $180 billion, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. While this growth may mask base-layer fee pressure, it suggests that Ethereum's usage has undergone a multi-year recovery, potentially paving the way for future price movement.
