The quest for enhanced privacy on public blockchains has now reached Bitcoin, with VerifiedX launching a new privacy-focused layer designed to protect transactions while maintaining the ability to audit them when necessary. The newly introduced system, Prism, allows for the encryption of balances, the creation of shielded addresses, and selective information disclosure. This enables users to conduct private transactions while still being able to demonstrate compliance when required, as stated in an announcement shared with CoinDesk. This development is part of a larger industry shift. Recently, the XRP Ledger has incorporated zero-knowledge proof capabilities, specifically targeting institutional users who wish to keep their transactions private on public ledgers. This highlights the primary obstacle to institutional adoption: the lack of confidentiality. Although public blockchains foster trust through openness, they also expose sensitive information such as balances, transaction counterparts, and flow – something institutions typically avoid in traditional finance. When applied to Bitcoin, such developments hold significant weight. As the largest digital asset, Bitcoin serves as the primary entry point for institutional capital, and enhancements to its functionality, particularly regarding privacy and usability, have the potential to impact the entire sector more profoundly than similar upgrades on smaller networks. VerifiedX is applying this model directly to Bitcoin, allowing assets to move seamlessly between transparent and shielded states. 'Viewing keys' also enable selective access for auditors or regulators. Beyond facilitating private payments, the system supports a range of programmable use cases, including private lending, trading, and automated transactions, all without revealing positions or intent on the blockchain.
