Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

The World project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to the World ID system, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online by enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and Zoom, where a 'Deep Face' feature verifies meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is working with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements and rolling out 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach credentials proving human presence to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals.
