In a move to bolster the security of the burgeoning cryptocurrency industry, the US Department of the Treasury is now offering crypto businesses the opportunity to receive timely cybersecurity threat alerts, mirroring the service already provided to traditional financial institutions. According to a recent statement, eligible cryptocurrency firms can register for this free service, which will be facilitated by the Treasury's Office of Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Protection. The decision to extend this service is in response to a recommendation from the President's Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, which emphasized the importance of information sharing in mitigating cyber-attack risks. Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Luke Pettit noted that by sharing high-quality cybersecurity information, the Treasury aims to foster a more secure digital asset ecosystem.

The cryptocurrency sector has long been vulnerable to malicious hacks, with significant funds and data being compromised regularly. Recent incidents, including the theft of over $280 million from the decentralized platform Drift by North Korean-linked hackers, underscore the need for enhanced security measures. The expansion of the cybersecurity alert system is seen as a crucial step in addressing the concerns of US lawmakers, who are considering legislation to regulate the crypto sector.
