The Ethereum Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing a critical need within the ecosystem: bolstering security. The organization has introduced a novel initiative on Tuesday, aimed at mitigating a persistent hurdle in crypto development – the exorbitant costs associated with smart contract security audits.
Through the 'Audit Subsidy Program', the foundation has established partnerships with prominent audit providers and ecosystem firms, with the goal of making professional security assessments more accessible to developers. The program, backed by a $1 million subsidy, is designed to alleviate the financial obstacles that have historically hindered numerous teams from undergoing comprehensive audits, despite their significance as a best practice within the industry. This initiative is part of the foundation's broader Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, which focuses on fortifying Ethereum as it expands to support increasingly complex applications and larger on-chain value.
The program boasts an impressive array of partners, including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, and connects developers with over 20 top-tier audit firms, thereby streamlining access to trusted security expertise throughout the ecosystem. Concurrently with the rollout, the foundation has introduced a novel framework, dubbed the 'CROPS principles', an acronym for censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. This framework is intended to guide the development and evaluation of applications across the Ethereum ecosystem.
Developers can submit their projects for consideration, following which an expert committee reviews the applications. Selected teams receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform. The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet developers, regardless of their project's size or stage.
