The Ethereum Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing a critical need within the ecosystem: enhancing security measures. The organization has introduced a novel initiative designed to overcome a persistent challenge in cryptocurrency development – the exorbitant costs associated with smart contract security audits. Through the "Audit Subsidy Program", the foundation has collaborated with prominent audit providers and ecosystem partners to increase accessibility to professional security assessments for developers. With a $1 million subsidy fund, the program aims to alleviate financial obstacles that have historically hindered numerous teams from conducting comprehensive audits, despite their significance as a best practice within the industry.

This initiative forms part of the foundation's broader Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, which focuses on bolstering Ethereum's security as it expands to support increasingly complex applications and larger on-chain value. The program boasts partnerships with companies such as Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, connecting developers with over 20 reputable audit firms and streamlining access to trusted security expertise throughout the ecosystem. Concurrently with the program's rollout, the foundation introduced a new framework known as the "CROPS principles" – an acronym for censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.

This framework is intended to inform the development and evaluation of applications across the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers can submit their projects for consideration, after which an expert committee reviews the applications.

Selected teams receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform. The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet developers, regardless of their project's size or stage. According to the foundation, "the subsidy program increases the accessibility of audits and fortifies the Ethereum ecosystem".
