Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its busiest quarter on record, with its native token's price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, marking a significant milestone. This represents a substantial increase from the 2023 low of approximately 90 million quarterly transactions, which had remained relatively stagnant between 100 million and 120 million throughout most of 2024. The Ethereum blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely processing and recording actions such as token transfers and smart contract interactions. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity, which began in mid-2025, has been driven by increased adoption of Layer 2 solutions and stablecoins. Notably, the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum has reached a record $180 billion, accounting for around 60% of the global stablecoin market. While Ethereum's native token has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 high, this divergence may present an opportunity for traders to capitalize on the network's fundamental growth. The majority of transactions are taking place on Layer 2 networks, which are built on top of Ethereum and offer cheaper transaction fees, with the activity being settled on the main chain. However, some analysts have flagged the risk that Layer 2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, potentially reducing the network's revenue per transaction.
