Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining relatively stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, surpassing the 200 million mark for the first time. This significant increase marks a substantial recovery from the 2023 lows, when quarterly transactions hit a bottom of approximately 90 million. The Ethereum blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries, allowing for secure and transparent transactions. These transactions can include actions such as sending the native token ether (ETH), interacting with smart contracts, or transferring tokens, all of which are securely processed and recorded on the blockchain. The surge in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025 and has continued to grow, with Q1 2026 seeing a 43% increase in activity from Q4 2025. This growth has been driven in part by the increasing popularity of Layer 2s and stablecoins on the network. Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, allow for cheap and efficient transaction processing, which is then batched and settled on the main chain. Stablecoins, which are tokenized versions of fiat currencies, have also seen significant growth, with the total supply on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. While this growth is a positive sign for the network, some analysts have raised concerns that the increased activity on Layer 2s may be masking fee pressure on the base layer. The upcoming quarter will be closely watched to see if the 200 million transaction mark can be sustained and if the growth is driven by genuine user adoption rather than bot activity.
