Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Dangers of Centralized AI Control

The cryptocurrency space is on the cusp of a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents can interact, coordinate, and verify transactions on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto infrastructure to facilitate machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the idea that blockchain technology is well-suited for machine intelligences, but he does not envision humans being replaced by AI. Instead, he forecasts that increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complex interactions, enabling users to engage with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also comes with risks, as the concentration of AI infrastructure among a few large tech firms could lead to trouble, according to Lubin. He stressed the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to transparently verify one another. In line with this shift, products like MetaMask are evolving to become more like personal financial operating systems, where AI-powered agents can manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy. Lubin also touched on the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting companies to seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He emphasized that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are later used across other networks. The growth of stablecoins, while significant, is seen as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems, with Lubin anticipating the development of more robust, crypto-native forms of money through decentralized collateral. On tokenization, Lubin noted that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems to create a more granular and programmable global economy. When asked about longer-term technical risks like quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality and view it as part of the natural evolution of the Ethereum ecosystem.
