Morgan Stanley Launches the Most Affordable Bitcoin ETF to Date, Attracting $100 Million in Its First Week
Morgan Stanley's spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, MSBT, has seen significant inflows of over $100 million in its first week of trading, demonstrating strong initial demand for the bank's latest foray into digital assets. The fund, which started trading on April 8, tracks the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark 4 PM New York Settlement Rate and has a 0.14% expense ratio, making it the cheapest product in its category and giving it a pricing advantage as competition among issuers intensifies. However, cost is only one aspect of the story, as MSBT benefits from Morgan Stanley's vast wealth management business, which manages trillions of dollars in client assets, providing a direct channel to investors who may prefer exposure to bitcoin through managed portfolios rather than crypto-native platforms. This reach could be crucial as the spot bitcoin ETF market evolves, with MSBT's early inflows being notable, although the fund remains smaller than BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, which has amassed over $53 billion in assets since its launch in January 2024. According to Morgan Stanley's head of digital assets, Amy Oldenburg, MSBT has become the firm's most successful ETF launch. Analysts expect Morgan Stanley's product to attract assets from existing funds, particularly among clients within its advisory ecosystem, while also expanding the overall market by bringing in new investors. The move has already prompted responses from peers, with Goldman Sachs filing for a Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, marking one of its first direct entries into the crypto investment space, and BlackRock preparing a similar income-focused ETF, highlighting the shift in competition beyond simple spot exposure to more structured offerings. The development signifies a broader Wall Street shift, with legacy financial institutions acknowledging the growing importance of bitcoin, and experts predicting that other firms, such as JPMorgan, may soon follow suit.
