Patrick Witt, the primary crypto adviser to the White House, has stated that efforts are underway to solidify a compromise that will facilitate the progression of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in the U.S. Senate. In a recent CoinDesk TV interview, Witt expressed optimism that the common ground achieved by key senators from both parties regarding stablecoin yield will endure.
Witt mentioned that resolving the stablecoin yield issue was a prerequisite for addressing other outstanding matters, which he is currently focusing on. Although some issues have already been resolved, Witt declined to specify the topics that have been settled in the ongoing negotiations.
The Clarity Act has encountered several potential obstacles, including illicit financial protections in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space and a request from Democrats to bar senior government officials from profiting from the crypto sector. Witt expressed confidence that the remaining issues can be resolved, citing the progress made in the background while the yield argument between banks and crypto firms garnered attention. The Clarity Act requires a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee before it can proceed to a final Senate vote. The process was delayed earlier in the year due to objections from bank lobbyists regarding stablecoin yield.
A recent report by White House economists downplayed the threats posed by stablecoin yield, prompting a response from the American Bankers Association. Witt noted that the views of bankers on stablecoins vary widely, depending on their proximity to the technology.
