The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure aimed at consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul focuses on enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services, addressing growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online. Altman, also known for his work with OpenAI and ChatGPT, emphasizes the importance of distinguishing humans from AI agents in the digital realm. The World system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices for in-person identity verification, generating a unique cryptographic code through facial and iris scans. The images are then deleted, and only anonymized code fragments are distributed across a network to prevent duplicate registrations. The updated architecture prioritizes improved privacy, security, and usability, featuring account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms.
