Charles Hoskinson Claims Bitcoin's Quantum Solution is a Hard Fork That Fails to Protect Satoshi's Coins

Earlier this week, Bitcoin's core developers proposed a plan to freeze 8 million coins in an effort to defend against quantum attacks. However, according to a video posted by Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, this plan is still insufficient to protect the coins owned by the network's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Hoskinson argues that the proposed solution, BIP-361, is technically flawed and would require a hard fork, which would invalidate existing signature schemes. He also claims that the plan's zero-knowledge recovery approach cannot rescue the roughly 1.7 million bitcoins that predate 2013, including those associated with Satoshi's early mining activity, due to differences in key derivation methods. This criticism highlights the challenges faced by the Bitcoin network in resolving tradeoffs and implementing upgrades, particularly in the absence of a formal on-chain governance structure.
