Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Unprecedented Transaction Volume
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its highest transaction volume on record, with its base layer processing 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026. This milestone marks a significant increase from the 90 million transactions recorded in 2023, according to data from Artemis. The Ethereum blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automated execution of agreements without intermediaries, with transactions being securely recorded and stored. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to the growth of Layer 2s and stablecoins. Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, have been driving the increase in transactions, with users taking advantage of lower fees. Stablecoins, which are tokenized versions of fiat currencies, have also seen significant growth, with the total supply on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. This growth has contributed to higher transaction counts on the base layer, even when end users do not directly interact with it. While some analysts have raised concerns that Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, the overall trend suggests that Ethereum's usage has completed a multi-year recovery, which could potentially precede price movement.
