Major Upgrade Unveiled by Sam Altman's World Project to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

On Friday, World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, announced its most substantial upgrade to the World ID system. This 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure is designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. The upgrade was revealed at an event in San Francisco, amidst growing concerns across the tech industry about bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other AI tools. World's system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity. To obtain a World ID, individuals must visit an Orb in person, which scans their face and iris to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized fragments of the code are sent across a distributed network to confirm the person has not previously registered, resulting in a credential that proves someone is a unique human online without revealing their identity or personal data. However, some critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focused on improving privacy, security, and usability, with new features including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as social media login. World is also introducing integrations with consumer platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and a 'Concert Kit' to help artists reserve tickets for verified individuals to combat scalper bots. Partnerships with Razer, Mythical Games, and Reddit are also part of the rollout, focusing on gaming and online communities. On the enterprise side, World is working with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants are real humans, and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Additionally, World is rolling out 'AgentKit' to allow developers to attach credentials proving human presence to agents, enabling agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals. The company is collaborating with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase on these capabilities, aiming to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data.
