A leading Bitcoin developer has created a working prototype of a tool that could rescue wallets in the event of a quantum computer attack on the Bitcoin network. The tool, demonstrated by Olaoluwa Osuntokun, CTO of Lightning Labs, addresses a significant flaw in Bitcoin's defense plan against quantum attacks.
If a quantum computer were to break Bitcoin's encryption, it could potentially allow attackers to seize funds from wallets. To prevent this, a proposed emergency upgrade would disable the current signature system, but this would also lock out users who have not migrated to quantum-resistant wallets. Osuntokun's prototype provides an alternative way for users to prove ownership of their wallets, without relying on the vulnerable signature system. The prototype is already functional and has been demonstrated to work, although it is still an early version and has not been formally proposed for implementation on the Bitcoin blockchain.
The development reflects the ongoing efforts of the Bitcoin community to prepare for potential quantum threats and ensure the long-term security of the network.
