In an interview with CoinDesk, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Mike Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to defending its 'exclusive regulatory authority' over prediction markets in court. Selig stated, 'Regardless of the subject matter, whether it's sports, politics, or otherwise, if a product is offered within a CFTC-regulated exchange, it falls under our regulatory purview.' The CFTC is currently engaged in lawsuits against several states, including Arizona, Illinois, and Connecticut, to establish its authority over commodity derivatives markets.

Selig noted that a recent Third Circuit Court ruling supporting the CFTC's oversight of prediction markets reinforces the agency's position. The CFTC is also undergoing a formal rulemaking process to clarify its regulatory framework for prediction markets.

Furthermore, Selig highlighted the importance of the agency's interpretative guidance, published in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission, in providing clear guidelines for companies seeking to self-certify futures products tied to digital assets.
