Bitcoin Price Drops Below $74,000 as Upsurge to New Heights Fails Again

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) $74,813.14 experienced a sharp decline in US morning trading on Thursday, plummeting 2% in a matter of minutes after failing to breach the increasingly formidable resistance level. The largest cryptocurrency plummeted to around $73,500 during the US morning session, now down by over 1% in the past 24 hours. This downturn occurred after the cryptocurrency was once again rebuffed following a rise above $75,000. In tandem, the remarkable stock market rally - which sent the Nasdaq and S&P 500 to record highs on the previous day - experienced a pause, with both indices down approximately 0.1% just over an hour into the session. Additionally, crypto-related stocks retreated across the board, with Coinbase (COIN), MicroStrategy (MSTR), Robinhood (HOOD), and Circle (CRCL) all down roughly 2%-3% in morning trading. Meanwhile, crude oil prices surged around 2%, reclaiming the $90 level, as ongoing geopolitical tensions continued to fuel supply concerns. The $75,000-$76,000 range is crucial for bitcoin, as this was the level at which it traded prior to the February 5 market crash that sent BTC plummeting to $60,000. A successful breach of this level might indicate a larger move, potentially driving prices back to the $90,000 mark at which bitcoin began the year. In related news, software stocks are catching up to bitcoin, with the two having moved almost in tandem prior to the Middle East conflict at the end of February, exhibiting a near 1:1 correlation. Since the conflict began, bitcoin has gained over 11%, while the software ETF (IGV) has risen by roughly 2%, prompting speculation that bitcoin was beginning to decouple from software equities. However, over the past five days, IGV has been catching up, surging as much as 11%, while bitcoin has remained flat. This suggests that rather than a clean decoupling, software stocks may have simply been lagging behind bitcoin and are now catching up, with IGV up 1% on Thursday, while bitcoin is down 1.5%.
