Patrick Witt, the chief cryptocurrency adviser to the White House, has expressed optimism that a recent agreement on stablecoin yield will remain in place, allowing the US Senate to move forward with the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. In a recent interview, Witt stated that several other issues are being addressed behind the scenes, and he is hopeful that the compromise reached will be sustainable.
The stablecoin yield issue had been a major point of contention, with bankers warning that it could jeopardize their deposit base. However, Witt believes that the common ground achieved on this issue will hold, enabling the Senate to focus on other outstanding issues.
These include protections against illicit financial activities in the decentralized finance space and a proposal to prevent senior government officials from profiting from the cryptocurrency sector. While Witt did not disclose which topics have been resolved, he confirmed that significant progress has been made in the ongoing negotiations.
The Clarity Act will require a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee before it can proceed to a final vote. A recent report by White House economists downplayed the threats posed by stablecoin yield, prompting a response from the American Bankers Association. Witt noted that the views of bankers on this issue are diverse, ranging from positive to threatened, depending on their proximity to the technology.
