A leading Bitcoin developer has successfully created a solution to a long-standing issue in the community: a method to safeguard ordinary wallets in the event of a quantum computer attack on the network. This innovation could prevent millions of users from being locked out of their funds.
The proposed solution involves creating a quantum-resistant wallet rescue tool, which has been demonstrated by Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, CTO of Lightning Labs, in a post to the Bitcoin developer mailing list. The tool addresses a critical flaw in Bitcoin's defense plan against quantum attacks, which could potentially render millions of wallets inaccessible. Bitcoin's current encryption method is vulnerable to being broken by powerful quantum computers, allowing attackers to access private keys and steal funds.
To mitigate this risk, developers have been discussing a drastic 'emergency brake' upgrade, which would disable the current signature system network-wide to prevent attacks. However, this upgrade could also freeze out users who have not migrated to quantum-resistant wallets. Osuntokun's prototype provides an 'escape hatch' by allowing users to mathematically prove they are the rightful owners of a wallet, using the secret 'seed' that generated the wallet, without revealing the seed itself.
This proof can be used to rescue wallets that would otherwise be stranded due to the emergency upgrade. The prototype is already functional, with proof generation taking around 55 seconds and verification taking under two seconds. While there is no formal proposal to add this feature to the Bitcoin blockchain, the development closes a theoretical gap in protecting Bitcoin from quantum threats without causing collateral damage to users.
