Tether Boosts Bitcoin Reserves by $70 Million, Surpassing 97,000 BTC

In a recent development, Tether, the entity behind the prominent USDT stablecoin, has added $70 million worth of bitcoin to its reserves, marking a continuation of its steady accumulation strategy linked to its stablecoin operations. According to data from Arkham Intelligence, 951 BTC were transferred from Bitfinex to a wallet designated as 'Tether: BTC Reserve' on Wednesday. This address has been previously confirmed by CEO Paolo Ardoino as the intended destination for the company's earlier bitcoin purchases. The firm declined to comment on the recent acquisition. The wallet now holds approximately 97,141 BTC, valued at around $7.16 billion at current prices, positioning Tether as one of the largest bitcoin holders globally. If Tether were a publicly traded company, it would rank as the second-largest BTC holder, surpassed only by Strategy (MSTR), according to bitcointreasuries.net rankings. This latest purchase is in line with the company's policy, introduced in 2023, to allocate up to 15% of its realized operating profits into bitcoin. Notably, Tether utilizes excess earnings from its core business to invest in bitcoin, differing from digital asset treasuries that raise capital specifically for crypto purchases. The USDT stablecoin, pegged to the US dollar, boasts a market capitalization of around $185 billion, making it the largest stablecoin. In 2025, the company reported net profits exceeding $10 billion, driven by the growth of USDT and increasing income from US Treasury holdings. Tether's reserves primarily consist of cash-like assets, with exposure to US government debt totaling up to $141 billion. Additionally, the company reported $6.3 billion in excess reserves against $186.5 billion in liabilities, providing a buffer above the value of issued tokens. Alongside US Treasuries, Tether has been expanding its positions in alternative assets, with its latest report revealing $17.4 billion in gold, underscoring a broader diversification strategy.
