Investigation Underway into Mysterious Death of Crypto Fund Manager's Fiancée in Zanzibar
An inquiry is ongoing in Tanzania into the alleged suicide of Ashly Robinson, a 31-year-old US lifestyle influencer, who was found unresponsive in a luxury villa at Zuri Zanzibar, where she was celebrating her birthday and recent engagement with her fiancé, Joe McCann, founder of Asymmetric, a crypto investment firm. Despite the police confirming that Robinson died by suicide following a misunderstanding with McCann, her family has expressed doubts about the circumstances surrounding her death. The couple had reportedly been involved in a heated argument before being separated by hotel staff, and McCann is currently being investigated, with his passport withheld by the authorities. McCann has been questioned by the police and has been asked to remain in the country pending the outcome of the forensic examination of Robinson's autopsy. The hotel where the incident occurred has offered its condolences to Robinson's family and is cooperating fully with the local authorities and the US Embassy. Robinson's family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover travel costs, arrangements, and other expenses, which has exceeded its target. McCann, who has an estimated net worth of $45 million, is a well-known figure in the crypto industry, having led Asymmetric, a hedge fund and venture firm backed by prominent investors. However, in December, he announced that he would be shutting down Asymmetric's Liquid Alpha Fund due to significant financial losses. The US State Department has offered its condolences to Robinson's family but has declined to comment further on the investigation, citing privacy and other considerations.
