A prominent Bitcoin developer has created a working prototype for a tool that could rescue wallets in the event of a quantum computer attack. The prototype, developed by Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, chief technology officer at Lightning Labs, offers a solution to a long-standing issue in Bitcoin's defense plan. If a quantum computer were to attack the network, a proposed 'emergency brake' upgrade could lock out millions of users from their funds. Osuntokun's prototype provides an 'escape hatch' by allowing users to mathematically prove they are the rightful owners of their wallets, without revealing their secret 'seed'.
The system is designed to work even if the emergency brake is activated, which would disable the current digital signature system. The prototype is already functional, with proof generation taking around 55 seconds and verification taking under two seconds. While there is no formal proposal to add it to the Bitcoin blockchain, the prototype addresses a significant gap in the network's defense plan and provides a potential solution to a pressing issue.
