Investigation Underway in Suspicious Death of Crypto Fund Manager's Fiancée in Zanzibar
An inquiry is ongoing in Tanzania into the alleged suicide of Ashly Robinson, a U.S. social media influencer, during a trip to Zanzibar with her fiancé, Joe McCann, founder of the crypto investment firm Asymmetric. Robinson, 31, was found unresponsive in a private villa at the luxury Zuri Zanzibar resort, where the couple was celebrating her birthday and recent engagement. Despite police initially confirming her death as a suicide following a 'misunderstanding' between the couple, the investigation is still active, and McCann's passport has been withheld. The couple had been involved in a heated argument, separated by hotel staff, and sent to different rooms. McCann has been questioned by the police and asked to remain in the country pending the forensic results of Robinson's autopsy. The hotel has expressed its condolences and is cooperating fully with the authorities. Robinson's family has set up a GoFundMe page, seeking $50,000 to cover travel costs and other expenses, expressing doubts about the official cause of death. McCann, with an estimated net worth of $45 million, is a prominent figure in the crypto industry, having led Asymmetric, a hedge fund and venture firm backed by notable investors. The U.S. State Department has offered its condolences to the Robinson family, while the Tanzania Police Force has not commented further on the investigation.
