Investigation Underway into Crypto Executive's Fiancée's Suspicious Death in Zanzibar
An inquiry is ongoing in Tanzania into the death of Ashly Robinson, a US social media influencer, who passed away during a vacation in Zanzibar with her fiancé, Joe McCann, the founder of Asymmetric, a cryptocurrency investment firm. The 31-year-old lifestyle creator, also known as Ashlee Jenae, was discovered unresponsive in a private villa at the luxury Zuri Zanzibar resort on April 9, where the couple had been celebrating her birthday and recent engagement. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital. According to the Zanzibar police, Robinson's death has been confirmed as a suicide, following a 'misunderstanding' between the couple. However, the police have not ruled out other factors and are continuing their investigation. It has been reported that the couple had a heated argument before being separated by hotel staff and sent to separate rooms. Despite the confirmation of suicide, the police are still investigating and have withheld McCann's passport. The police have questioned McCann and requested that he remain in the country until the forensic results from Robinson's autopsy are available. The hotel has expressed its condolences, stating that it is 'deeply saddened' by the incident and is cooperating fully with the local authorities and the US Embassy. Robinson's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover travel costs, arrangements, and other unexpected expenses, as they have expressed doubts about the cause of her death. McCann, who has an estimated net worth of $45 million, is a well-known figure in the institutional crypto space, having led Asymmetric, a hedge fund and venture firm backed by prominent investors. In December, he announced the shutdown of Asymmetric's Liquid Alpha Fund due to significant financial losses throughout 2025. The couple had traveled to Zanzibar on April 4, according to a statement from the Tanzanian police. Efforts to contact the Zanzibar police for further information have been unsuccessful, and the Tanzania Police Force has not responded to email requests for comment. The US State Department has offered its condolences to Robinson's family, stating that the safety and security of Americans are a top priority, but has declined to comment further due to privacy considerations.
