The Ethereum Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing a critical requirement within the ecosystem: bolstering security. The organization has announced the introduction of a novel program designed to mitigate a persistent challenge in the development of cryptocurrency: the exorbitant costs associated with security audits for smart contracts. Through a collaborative effort with prominent audit providers and firms operating within the ecosystem, the foundation's 'Audit Subsidy Program' aims to increase accessibility to professional security assessments for developers.
Supported by a $1 million subsidy, the program seeks to alleviate financial obstacles that have historically hindered numerous teams from conducting comprehensive audits, despite the fact that such audits are considered a best practice within the industry. This initiative forms part of the foundation's broader Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, which focuses on fortifying Ethereum as it expands to accommodate increasingly complex applications and greater on-chain value. The program boasts partnerships with organizations such as Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, and facilitates connections between builders and over 20 reputable audit firms, thereby streamlining access to trusted security expertise throughout the ecosystem. Concurrent with the program's rollout, the foundation has also introduced a novel framework, dubbed the 'CROPS principles', an acronym denoting censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.
This framework is intended to provide guidance on the development and evaluation of applications across the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers can submit their projects for consideration, following which an expert committee reviews the applications. Selected teams receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform.
The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet developers, regardless of their project's size or stage. According to the foundation, 'the subsidy program renders audits accessible and fortifies the Ethereum ecosystem.'
