A prominent Bitcoin developer has created a long-debated solution to rescue standard wallets in the event of a quantum attack on the network. This solution aims to address a significant flaw in Bitcoin's defense plan, which could lock out millions of users from their funds. The proposed tool, unveiled by Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, provides an alternative method for wallet owners to prove ownership without relying on the vulnerable digital signature system. This approach allows users to mathematically prove they are the original creators of the wallet, using the secret seed, without revealing the seed itself.
The prototype is functional, with proof generation taking approximately 55 seconds and verification under two seconds. Although there is no formal proposal for its implementation, the prototype addresses a critical gap in Bitcoin's defense strategy, providing a potential solution to protect users from quantum attacks without freezing their wallets.
