The emergence of quantum computing has sparked widespread concern about its potential impact on legacy blockchain systems. According to experts, XRP's architecture may offer better protection against quantum threats than Bitcoin's. This is due in part to the XRP Ledger's open-source, decentralized nature and its use of additional security features. For instance, a recent audit found that approximately 300,000 XRP accounts, holding around 2.4 billion XRP, have never sent funds and thus have not exposed their public keys to the network, making them quantum-safe by default.
In contrast, Bitcoin's blockchain has a larger portion of its supply vulnerable to quantum attacks, with around 6.9 million BTC at risk, which is nearly 35% of its circulating supply. Furthermore, XRP's key rotation feature and escrow functionality provide additional layers of protection against quantum risks.
While Bitcoin developers are working on proposals to develop quantum resistance, XRP's existing features may give it an advantage in terms of security against quantum threats.
