A recent report by Wall Street broker Bernstein highlights the growing threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency landscape, as significant advancements in the field accelerate the timeline for potential risks. However, the broker emphasizes that these risks are manageable, and Bitcoin's multi-year upgrade cycle will provide ample time to address the challenges posed by quantum computing. The report notes that while quantum computers could potentially weaken cryptographic systems, the threat is not unique to Bitcoin and affects various industries, including finance and defense. Bernstein analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, suggest that the focus should be on viewing quantum computing as a medium to long-term system upgrade cycle, rather than a risk.
The broker estimates that the crypto industry has approximately three to five years to transition to post-quantum cryptography, with upgrades such as new wallet standards and key rotation already being discussed. Furthermore, the report highlights that the energy requirements for a quantum computer to attack the Bitcoin blockchain would be enormous, with one academic paper suggesting it would require the energy output of a star.
