Bitcoin Reaches $70,000 as Institutional Investors Show Growing Interest

Francisco Rodrigues reports (all times ET unless specified otherwise) On Tuesday, the cryptocurrency market, led by Bitcoin, which briefly hit $70,000, showed mixed signals following reports of a proposed ceasefire in Iran. This development comes on the heels of a significant influx of funds into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the largest since late February. Despite the market's focus on the challenging macroeconomic environment, the demand from Bitcoin ETF investors suggests they view the current market conditions as a buying opportunity. Research by Binance earlier this month found that the correlation between Bitcoin and its Global Easing Breadth Index, which tracks 41 central banks, turned negative after the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs. Institutional flows driven by ETFs tend to be forward-looking, anticipating potential policy changes. This implies that institutional capital may be accumulating in anticipation of an expected easing of monetary policy. According to Bitfinex Alpha, the market is currently range-bound but fragile, characterized by weak organic demand, slower corporate treasury purchases, and options positioning that becomes more unstable below $68,000 as investors seek downside protection. Macro pressures also remain a significant concern. With Brent crude prices remaining above $110 a barrel, investors are on edge due to the looming deadline imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Iran for a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz. Given the expected rise in inflation caused by higher energy costs, the market sees little room for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates in the near future. The upcoming U.S. inflation data later this week will be closely watched. For more analysis on today's altcoin and derivatives activity, see Crypto Markets Today.
