The Ethereum Foundation is placing a strong emphasis on addressing a critical requirement within the ecosystem: enhanced security measures. The organization has announced the introduction of a novel program designed to combat the persistently high costs associated with smart contract security audits in cryptocurrency development. Through the 'Audit Subsidy Program', the foundation has established partnerships with prominent audit providers and key ecosystem players to increase accessibility to professional security assessments for developers. With a subsidy pool of $1 million, the program aims to minimize the financial obstacles that have historically hindered numerous teams from conducting comprehensive audits, despite the fact that such audits are considered a best practice within the industry.
This initiative is part of the foundation's broader 'Trillion Dollar Security Initiative', which focuses on bolstering the security of Ethereum as it expands to support increasingly complex applications and larger on-chain transactions. The program boasts an impressive list of partners, including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, and connects developers with over 20 top-tier audit firms, thereby simplifying access to trusted security expertise throughout the ecosystem. Concurrently with the program's launch, the foundation has also unveiled a new framework known as the 'CROPS principles', which stands for censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. This framework is intended to provide guidance on the development and evaluation of applications across the Ethereum ecosystem.
Developers can submit their projects for consideration, and an expert committee will review the applications. Selected teams will receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform. The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet developers, regardless of their project's size or stage.
According to the foundation, 'the subsidy program makes audits accessible and strengthens the Ethereum ecosystem'. For more information, refer to the Ethereum Foundation's newly published mandate, which outlines its role and core principles.
