Bitcoin Reaches $70,000 as Institutional Investors Show Growing Interest via ETF Inflows
By Francisco Rodrigues (All times are in ET unless otherwise stated) On Tuesday, the cryptocurrency market, led by Bitcoin (BTC) at $74,096.94, exhibited mixed trends. Notably, Bitcoin briefly hit the $70,000 mark following reports of a proposed ceasefire in Iran. This cautious market stance comes after a significant surge in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the previous day, the largest since late February. Despite the challenging macroeconomic environment, the demand from Bitcoin ETF investors suggests they view the current price fluctuations as an opportunity for accumulation. Earlier this month, Binance Research discovered that the correlation between Bitcoin and its Global Easing Breadth Index, which tracks 41 central banks, became strongly negative after the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs. The flow of institutional capital into ETFs tends to be forward-looking, positioning for anticipated policy changes. This indicates that institutional investors may be accumulating Bitcoin in anticipation of an easing in monetary policy. Bitfinex Alpha characterized the market as range-bound but fragile, with weak organic demand, slower corporate treasury purchases, and options positioning that becomes more unstable below $68,000 as protection against downsides increases. The ongoing macroeconomic pressure is also a significant factor. With Brent crude prices remaining above $110 per barrel, the looming deadline imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Iran for a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz keeps investors on high alert. Given the expected rise in inflation due to higher energy costs, the market sees little scope for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in the near future. The upcoming U.S. inflation data later this week will be crucial. It's essential to stay alert to these developments.
