In a significant blow to the DeFi lending giant Aave, Chaos Labs, a crucial risk manager, has announced its departure from the ecosystem. This move marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits by key contributors, which have significantly altered the protocol's core operational team in recent months.
The exit of Chaos Labs follows those of other major contributors such as ACI and BGD Labs, signaling growing internal discord over the protocol's direction. Since 2022, Chaos Labs has been instrumental in overseeing risk across Aave's markets, playing a key role in the protocol's growth from approximately $5 billion to over $26 billion in total value locked, all while maintaining a record of 'zero material bad debt.' However, despite this successful track record, the firm has stated that it can no longer continue under the current conditions.
According to Omer Goldberg, CEO of Chaos Labs, 'The engagement no longer reflects how we believe risk should be managed,' pointing to a 'fundamental misalignment' with Aave's evolving strategy, particularly with the V4 upgrade. This upgrade introduces a new architecture and significantly expands the scope of risk management, which Chaos Labs argues increases both operational complexity and responsibility without a corresponding increase in resources or alignment. Goldberg emphasized that taking on new responsibilities requires new infrastructure and noted that the full operational burden of such a transition is unsustainable. Furthermore, Chaos Labs flagged the economics as unsustainable, operating at a loss even with a proposed $5 million budget, and warned that the loss of experienced contributors raises operational risk, especially during Aave's transition between versions.
The departure of Chaos Labs leaves open questions about how Aave will manage risk in its next phase of growth. In response, Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov assured that the protocol would continue to operate without disruption, highlighting that Chaos Labs was one of two risk providers, alongside LlamaRisk, and expressing gratitude for Chaos Labs' work over the years. Kulechov also noted that Aave will work with LlamaRisk and internal teams to ensure uninterrupted risk coverage.
