According to Blockstream CEO Adam Back, the threat of quantum computing to the Bitcoin network is still largely theoretical, but the industry must start preparing for a potential migration to quantum-resistant systems. As a pioneer in Bitcoin's cryptographic development, Back emphasized that while the risk is real, it is not yet a practical concern due to the lack of error correction in current quantum hardware.
He cited recent research and satire articles that highlight the long-term nature of this threat. Back's central argument is that rather than debating the timeline, the focus should be on timely preparation, allowing for a gradual migration to quantum-ready formats over the next decade. This aligns with the ongoing implementation of post-quantum cryptography, particularly following NIST's standardization in late 2024.
Back noted that active research and deployment are already underway, with a dedicated team working on publishing papers and implementing solutions, such as on Blockstream's Liquid network. The key challenge for the industry is to coordinate a smooth and orderly transition before the quantum threat becomes imminent.
