A prominent Bitcoin developer has successfully created a solution to a long-debated issue: a method to rescue standard wallets in the event of a quantum computer attack on the network. This innovation could prevent millions of users from being locked out of their funds. The prototype, unveiled by Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, addresses a significant flaw in Bitcoin's defense plan against quantum attacks. If implemented, a proposed 'emergency brake' upgrade could protect the network but also freeze users out of their wallets.
Osuntokun's proposal offers an alternative solution. Bitcoin's current encryption method is vulnerable to powerful quantum computers, which could potentially break the encryption and allow attackers to steal funds. A proposed solution, known as BIP-360, would provide users with a new, quantum-resistant wallet type to transfer their funds to before any threat arises. However, not all users may migrate in time, which is why developers have been discussing a more drastic 'emergency brake' measure.
This measure would disable Bitcoin's current signature system, preventing attackers from draining wallets but also leaving many users without access to their funds. Osuntokun's prototype provides a workaround for these users, allowing them to prove ownership of their wallets without relying on the vulnerable signature system. Instead, the system uses a mathematical proof that the user is the original creator of the wallet, based on the secret 'seed' used to generate the wallet. This proof does not require revealing the seed itself, ensuring that using it to rescue one wallet does not compromise any others derived from the same seed.
The prototype is already functional, with a proof generation time of approximately 55 seconds and a verification time of under two seconds. While there is currently no formal proposal to integrate this system into the Bitcoin blockchain, and developers are still divided on the urgency of the quantum threat, the prototype fills a crucial gap in theory and could potentially protect Bitcoin users from being locked out of their wallets in the face of a quantum attack.
