In a significant development, Chaos Labs, a crucial risk management partner for Aave, has announced its departure from the DeFi lending platform's ecosystem. This move marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits by key contributors, which have substantially altered the protocol's core operational team in recent months.
The exit follows the earlier departures of prominent contributors such as ACI and BGD Labs, signaling growing internal discord over the protocol's direction. Since 2022, Chaos Labs has been instrumental in overseeing risk across Aave's markets, playing a key role in the protocol's growth from approximately $5 billion to over $26 billion in total value locked, while maintaining a flawless record of zero material bad debt.
However, despite this impressive track record, the firm has stated that it can no longer continue under the current conditions. According to Omer Goldberg, CEO of Chaos Labs, the engagement no longer aligns with the firm's risk management beliefs, citing a fundamental misalignment with Aave's evolving strategy.
A key point of contention is Aave's V4 upgrade, which introduces a new architecture and significantly expands the scope of risk management. Chaos Labs argues that this shift increases both operational complexity and responsibility without a corresponding increase in resources or alignment.
Goldberg emphasized that taking on new responsibilities requires new infrastructure and the full operational burden of scaling up, which is not feasible under the current conditions. Furthermore, the firm highlighted that the economics are unsustainable, even with a proposed $5 million budget, as it has been operating at a loss and would continue to do so.
The loss of experienced contributors also raises operational risk, particularly as Aave transitions between versions. In response to the news, Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov stated that the protocol would continue to operate without disruption, emphasizing that Chaos Labs was one of two risk providers, alongside LlamaRisk.
Kulechov expressed appreciation for Chaos Labs' work over the years and assured that Aave will work with LlamaRisk and internal teams to ensure uninterrupted risk coverage.
