The Securities and Exchange Commission is nearing the release of a proposed 'regulation crypto' that will outline its approach to overseeing the cryptocurrency industry, distinguishing between transactions that may be considered securities and those that are not, as announced by SEC Chair Paul Atkins on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee. Atkins stated that the proposed regulation, currently under review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, will focus on the Securities Act of 1933 and address fundraising and startup exemptions. Following his speech at an event hosted by Vanderbilt University and the Blockchain Association, Atkins informed CoinDesk that the SEC also plans to introduce its long-awaited innovation exemption soon, seeking feedback on its functionality and potential issues.
The exemption aims to promote experimentation without disadvantaging established companies, focusing on creating a framework for innovation. Atkins emphasized the importance of congressional support, highlighting the need for engagement in the upcoming election to ensure a favorable regulatory environment.
He cautioned that a shift in Congress's stance could hinder progress and create uncertainty, underscoring the need for a supportive legislature to facilitate the growth of the cryptocurrency industry.
