The rise of quantum computing poses a credible threat to Bitcoin, but Wall Street broker Bernstein believes this threat is manageable. Recent advancements in quantum computing have accelerated the timeline for potential crypto risks. However, the broker argues that Bitcoin is not facing an existential crisis, but rather a multi-year upgrade cycle. Quantum computing, which operates on the principles of quantum mechanics, has the potential to break modern cryptography due to its ability to process multiple possibilities simultaneously.
Despite this, scaling quantum systems to the level required to break widely used encryption remains a complex challenge. Bernstein analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, suggest that quantum computing should be viewed as a medium to long-term system upgrade cycle rather than a risk. The threat posed by quantum computing is not unique to Bitcoin and spans various industries, including finance and defense.
The exposure is mainly concentrated in older wallets, with around 1.7 million BTC at risk. However, newer practices and protocols reduce vulnerability, and Bitcoin mining remains secure even in advanced quantum scenarios. The crypto industry is expected to have sufficient time to transition toward post-quantum cryptography, with upgrades such as new wallet standards and key rotation already being discussed.
