In a significant development, Chaos Labs, a key risk management partner for Aave, has announced its departure from the DeFi lending platform's ecosystem. This move marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits by major contributors, which have substantially altered the protocol's core operational team in recent months. The exit of Chaos Labs follows those of other major contributors like ACI and BGD Labs, signaling internal friction and disagreements over the protocol's future direction.
Since 2022, Chaos Labs has been instrumental in overseeing risk across Aave's markets, playing a crucial role in the protocol's growth from approximately $5 billion to over $26 billion in total value locked, all while maintaining a pristine record of zero material bad debt. However, the firm has stated that it can no longer continue in its role under the current conditions. According to Omer Goldberg, CEO of Chaos Labs, the engagement no longer aligns with the firm's beliefs on risk management, citing a fundamental misalignment with Aave's evolving strategy.
Aave's V4 upgrade has emerged as a key point of contention, as it introduces a new architecture that significantly expands the scope of risk management. Chaos Labs argues that this shift increases operational complexity and responsibility without a corresponding increase in resources or alignment. Furthermore, the firm has highlighted the economics of the arrangement as unsustainable, even with a proposed $5 million budget, and has warned that the loss of experienced contributors raises operational risks, particularly as Aave transitions between versions. The departure of Chaos Labs leaves Aave facing questions about how it will manage risk through its next growth phase.
In response, Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov has assured that the protocol will continue to operate without disruption, emphasizing that Chaos Labs was one of two risk providers, alongside LlamaRisk. Kulechov expressed respect for Chaos Labs' decision and gratitude for their work, adding that Aave will work with LlamaRisk and internal teams to ensure uninterrupted risk coverage.
