In a significant development, Chaos Labs, a crucial risk management partner for Aave, has announced its departure from the DeFi lending platform's ecosystem. This move marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits by key contributors, which have significantly altered the protocol's core operational team over recent months. The exit of Chaos Labs follows those of other major contributors such as ACI and BGD Labs, signaling increasing internal tensions regarding the protocol's direction.

Since 2022, Chaos Labs has been instrumental in overseeing risk across Aave's markets. During this period, the protocol has experienced substantial growth, expanding from approximately $5 billion to over $26 billion in total value locked, all while maintaining a pristine record of 'zero material bad debt.' However, despite this impressive track record, Chaos Labs has stated that it can no longer continue its engagement under the current conditions. According to Omer Goldberg, CEO of Chaos Labs, 'The engagement no longer reflects our vision for risk management,' citing a 'fundamental misalignment' with Aave's evolving strategy in a post on X. Aave's V4 upgrade has emerged as a key point of contention.

This upgrade introduces a new architecture and significantly expands the scope of risk management. Chaos Labs argues that this shift not only increases operational complexity and responsibility but also does so without a corresponding increase in resources or alignment. As Goldberg noted, 'Embarking on something new responsibly necessitates new infrastructure...

and the full operational burden of going from zero to one again.' Furthermore, Chaos Labs has flagged the economics as unsustainable. Despite a proposed $5 million budget, the firm has been operating at a loss and anticipates continuing to do so. Goldberg emphasized, 'Even with an increase of $1m, we'd still be operating Aave's risk with negative margins.' Chaos Labs has also warned that the loss of experienced contributors is elevating operational risk, particularly as Aave transitions between versions. 'Continuity of brand is not the same thing as continuity of system,' Goldberg underscored.

The departure of Chaos Labs leaves Aave with open questions regarding how risk will be managed during its next growth phase. In response to the news, Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov posted on X that the protocol would continue to operate without disruption. He highlighted that Chaos Labs was one of two risk providers, with LlamaRisk being the other.

'We respect the decision of Chaos Labs... and want to thank [them] for their work over the years,' Kulechov wrote, adding that Aave will collaborate with LlamaRisk and internal teams to ensure 'uninterrupted risk coverage.'
