In response to the recent $270 million Drift Protocol hack, the Solana Foundation has announced a range of security measures, including the introduction of Stride, a program designed to evaluate and enhance the security of Solana DeFi protocols. The foundation has also established the Solana Incident Response Network (SIRN), a collaborative effort between security firms and researchers aimed at providing real-time crisis response.
While these initiatives address some of the vulnerabilities exposed by the Drift hack, they do not directly address the human element that was exploited in the attack, in which the hackers spent six months building relationships with Drift contributors and compromising their devices. Under the Stride program, protocols with over $10 million in total value locked will be eligible for ongoing operational security and active threat monitoring, with additional support for formal verification for protocols with over $100 million in TVL. The SIRN network will prioritize protocols based on their TVL and will be available to all Solana protocols. The Solana Foundation has emphasized that these programs do not shift the responsibility for security away from the protocols themselves, highlighting the importance of robust security measures at all levels.
