A prominent Bitcoin developer has successfully created a solution to a long-standing issue: a method to rescue standard wallets in the event of a quantum attack on the network. This development addresses a significant flaw in Bitcoin's defense strategy, which could potentially lock out millions of users from accessing their funds. The proposed solution, unveiled by Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, provides an alternative way for users to prove ownership of their wallets, without relying on the digital signature system that could be compromised by a quantum computer. This approach allows users to mathematically prove they are the original creators of their wallets, using the secret seed from which the wallet was generated, without revealing the seed itself.

The prototype has been successfully tested, with proof generation taking approximately 55 seconds and verification taking under two seconds. Although there is currently no formal proposal for its implementation, this breakthrough closes a significant gap in Bitcoin's defense strategy, providing a potential solution to protect users' funds without causing unintended collateral damage.
