The emergence of quantum computing has sparked concerns about its potential impact on Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. According to Wall Street broker Bernstein, recent breakthroughs in quantum computing have accelerated the timeline for potential attacks on modern cryptography. However, the firm argues that the risk is manageable and that Bitcoin is likely to undergo a multi-year upgrade cycle rather than face an existential crisis.
The broker notes that while quantum computers could potentially weaken cryptographic systems like elliptic curve encryption, the threat is not unique to Bitcoin and spans multiple industries, including finance and defense. Bernstein estimates that approximately 1.7 million BTC held in older wallets are vulnerable to quantum attacks, but newer practices and protocols have reduced this vulnerability.
The firm expects the crypto industry to have sufficient time, around three to five years, to transition toward post-quantum cryptography, with upgrades such as new wallet standards and key rotation already under discussion. Furthermore, an academic paper has suggested that attacking the Bitcoin blockchain through quantum mining would require an enormous amount of energy, equivalent to that of a star.
