The Solana Foundation has launched a billboard campaign in San Francisco with a counterintuitive message: 'Don't waste time with crypto.' At first glance, this seems paradoxical, but according to the foundation, it's a vote of confidence in crypto's future, particularly in its intersection with artificial intelligence. The idea is that instead of manually executing crypto transactions, which can be cumbersome, users can let AI agents handle the process. The campaign directs viewers to the x402 account on X, highlighting the Solana ecosystem's push to make blockchain a behind-the-scenes infrastructure for the next generation of the internet.

This vision is centered around creating an 'agentic' internet, where AI systems, rather than humans, initiate and execute economic activities. A key component of this vision is x402, a payment system designed for the internet, enabling apps, websites, and AI tools to automatically charge small amounts of money without requiring logins or human intervention. This facilitates 'agentic payments', which involve tiny fractions of a cent, and are difficult to support on traditional financial systems due to high fees and latency.

The Solana Foundation believes its high throughput and low transaction costs make it an ideal settlement layer for this emerging economy. The billboard's message encapsulates this shift, suggesting that if the technology is successful, users won't need to think about crypto at all. A Solana Foundation spokesperson noted that 'crypto and Solana are well on their way to being the default way AI pays', with agents gravitating towards networks where performance is key.
