According to Wall Street broker Bernstein, the rise of quantum computing presents a credible yet manageable threat to Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. Recent breakthroughs, such as Google Quantum AI's reduction in qubit requirements, have compressed the timeline for potential attacks on modern cryptography. However, the firm notes that scaling quantum systems to break widely used encryption remains a complex challenge.

Analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, suggest that quantum computing should be viewed as a medium to long-term system upgrade cycle rather than a risk. Quantum computing, which utilizes quantum mechanics and qubits, can solve certain problems more efficiently than classical computers, potentially weakening cryptographic systems like elliptic curve encryption. Nevertheless, the report emphasizes that the threat is a long-term, manageable risk that spans industries, and Bitcoin has sufficient time to transition toward post-quantum cryptography, with upgrades like new wallet standards and key rotation already being discussed.
