A prominent Bitcoin developer has successfully created a working prototype for a quantum-resistant wallet rescue tool, addressing a long-standing concern in the community. The tool is designed to prevent the freezing of millions of wallets in the event of a future quantum defense upgrade.
Olaoluwa 'Roasbeef' Osuntokun, Chief Technology Officer at Lightning Labs, introduced the prototype in a post on the Bitcoin developer mailing list. The tool targets a specific vulnerability in Bitcoin's defense plan, which could potentially lock users out of their funds.
Osuntokun's proposal provides an 'escape hatch' for users. Bitcoin's current encryption method is susceptible to being broken by powerful quantum computers, which could allow attackers to seize funds. A proposed solution, known as BIP-360, aims to provide users with a new, quantum-resistant wallet type.
However, migration to this new wallet type may take time, and not all users may make the transition in time. The 'emergency brake' upgrade, which would shut off Bitcoin's current signature system, could leave users stranded. Osuntokun's prototype offers a second way for users to prove ownership of their wallets, using the secret 'seed' that every Bitcoin wallet is generated from. The proof doesn't require revealing the seed itself, ensuring that using it to rescue one wallet doesn't compromise any others derived from the same seed.
The prototype is already functional, with a proof generation time of approximately 55 seconds and a verification time of under two seconds. While there is currently no formal proposal to add the tool to the Bitcoin blockchain, the prototype addresses a significant gap in the network's defense plan.
Academic researchers note that the quantum threat to Bitcoin is considered real, despite some uncertainty surrounding the timeline and likelihood of a large-scale attack.
