Following the removal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche has been announced as the new interim head of the US Department of Justice by President Donald Trump. Blanche previously served as Trump's attorney in a New York criminal case before being appointed deputy attorney general after Trump's re-election in 2024.
As deputy attorney general, Blanche took steps to dismantle the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, established under the Biden administration, and issued a memo instructing prosecutors to refrain from pursuing cases related to regulatory violations in the cryptocurrency sector. This move was referenced in a case involving Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, resulting in the dropping of a charge against him. Blanche's financial disclosures reveal that he transferred his cryptocurrency holdings, including Bitcoin, Solana, and Ethereum, to his family members.
However, it has been reported that he still held these assets, valued between $159,000 and $485,000, when he signed the enforcement memo, potentially violating ethics rules and his pledge to divest from crypto-related matters.
