Bitcoin Hits $70,000 as Institutional Investors Show Growing Interest via ETFs
By Francisco Rodrigues (All times ET unless otherwise stated) On Tuesday, the cryptocurrency market, led by Bitcoin, which briefly reached $70,000, exhibited mixed trends following reports of a proposed ceasefire in Iran. This cautious sentiment emerges a day after Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced their largest influx of capital since late February. This significant investment suggests that institutional investors view the current market conditions as a buying opportunity, despite the challenging macroeconomic environment. Research by Binance earlier this month revealed that the correlation between Bitcoin and its Global Easing Breadth Index, which monitors 41 central banks, shifted significantly towards a negative correlation after the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs. The flow of institutional capital into ETFs tends to be forward-looking, positioning for anticipated policy changes. This implies that institutional investors may be accumulating Bitcoin in anticipation of an easing of monetary policies. According to Bitfinex Alpha, the market is currently range-bound but fragile, characterized by weak organic demand, slower buying from corporate treasuries, and options positioning that becomes increasingly unstable below $68,000 as demand for downside protection grows. The ongoing macroeconomic pressure also plays a significant role. With Brent crude oil prices remaining above $110 per barrel due to the looming deadline imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Iran for a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz, investors remain cautious. Given the expected rise in inflation due to higher energy costs, the market anticipates little room for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in the near future. The upcoming U.S. inflation data release later this week will be closely watched. For further analysis of today's altcoin and derivatives market activity, see Crypto Markets Today.
