Following the removal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, President Trump has named Todd Blanche as the interim head of the Department of Justice. Blanche, who previously represented Trump in a New York criminal case, was appointed deputy attorney general after Trump's re-election in 2024.
As deputy attorney general, Blanche dismantled the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, established under the Biden administration, and issued a memo instructing prosecutors to refrain from pursuing regulatory cases in the crypto industry. This memo was cited in a case against Roman Storm, a Tornado Cash developer, which led to the dismissal of one charge.
However, according to his government ethics disclosure, Blanche held significant crypto assets, including Bitcoin, Solana, and Ethereum, which he transferred to his family members. Despite pledging to divest from crypto-related matters, Blanche still held these assets when he signed the enforcement memo, potentially violating ethics rules.
