In a bid to create a standardized, community-driven ecosystem for high-frequency microtransactions, Coinbase's AI-focused payment protocol, x402, is joining the Linux Foundation. This move is expected to address the limitations of traditional finance in handling such transactions. The x402 Foundation, the protocol's governing body, comprises notable companies like Cloudflare and Stripe, with additional support from a list of industry leaders. As AI-driven commerce continues to expand, the x402 protocol is designed to facilitate agentic payments, which involve autonomous transactions executed by AI agents.

Unlike traditional payment systems, x402 can handle transactions of fractions of a cent at high frequency, making it an attractive solution for certain areas of the crypto industry. By leveraging the Linux Foundation, x402 aims to establish an open-source ecosystem that addresses potential interoperability issues, much like the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) standard for web encryption. According to Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation, 'The internet was built on open protocols... The x402 Foundation will create an open, community-governed home to develop these capabilities in the open, ensuring they evolve with transparency, interoperability, and broad participation across the ecosystem.' The foundation's membership is set to include participants from various industries, with companies like Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, and Google expressing initial support.

James Tromans, Managing Director of Web3 and Digital Assets at Google Cloud, noted, 'The shift toward agentic commerce requires cloud infrastructure that is as open as the protocols it supports... By joining the x402 Foundation, Google is reinforcing its commitment to interoperable standards that enable secure, AI-driven transactions across platforms.'
